| Description: The redevelopment of the former Penny Savings Bank (Penny Place Condominiums) at 1361-1375 Washington Street in the South End of Boston (SOWA) entails the restoration of the original two-story white marble bank building, coupled with a new three-story contemporary glass addition. The Penny Savings Bank will be a mixed-use development project, which will include retail on the ground floor (a high-end restaurant called Banq and a Citibank branch), and parking using the existing driveway and lower level. The original bank building is a classical revival building, unusual for the Victorian South End, and was built between 1911 and 1917.
The new addition of a glass curtain wall to the original building will create a total of 23 condominiums consisting of loft studios, 1, 2, and 2+ bedroom condos. The Penny Savings Bank condos will provide unsurpassed views of the city and the Cathedral in Boston's South End. Some of the condos will feature loft-like interiors, as well as outdoor terraces or roof deck space. The glass addition tot he building will be set back from Washington Street and Union Park Street - residents of the Penny Place Condominiums enter through Union Park Street by way of a well-appointed lobby. The Penny Savings Bank development opened to residents in July 2007, boasting 23 high-end condos, 9,000 square feet of retail space, and parking for 25 cars in an underground garage. Of the 23 Penny Savings Bank condominiums, three werel designated affordable. The two commercial units on the ground floor of the development, along the Washington Street side, have been leased out to Citibank and the French Asian eatery, Banq Restaurant.
